Traditional DIY WeddingJalene + Matt: Traditional DIY Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on November 15, 2016

Jalene and Matt first met in high school, but remained “just friends” for years. Despite both being interested in each other, the timing never seemed to work out. On a Wednesday night in 2009, Jalene ran into Matt while out with friends, and he ended up walking her home. They (finally!) shared a kiss on Jalene’s doorstep and the rest is history.

The Proposal

Matt proposed to Jalene one night on their walk home. Arriving at a park overlooking the river valley, a violinist was playing their favourite song. The pair’s dog Coco was tied up close by with the ring around his neck. Matt popped the question, Jalene said yes, some (possibly illegal) fireworks went off, and their family and friends emerged cheering from hiding spots close by!

The Big Day

There were so many aspects of a traditional wedding that the couple wanted to incorporate into their special day. Their ceremony was held at the beautiful historic McDougall United Church, where they took full advantage of the pipe organ and opted for classic wedding songs like the Bridal Chorus and Wedding March. Their reception was at a community hall where they shared a family style meal (including mac and cheese) with 200 of their family and friends and ended the night with a truly epic dance party. Halfway through the mother- son dance, the groom and his mom busted out into a fully choreographed Ukrainian dance, wowing the crowd with their impressive moves and setting the tone for the rest of the night. Most of the wedding day decor was DIY, from the floral table arrangements to the signage, none of which would have been possible without the help of family and friends. They also made sure to include their 15 year old rescue dog Coco where they could, having him there for the family photos.

Favourite Moments

Jalene:Everything about our ceremony was perfect. I really can’t put into words the amount of love and happiness I felt in the room with us, not just from Matt but every other person there!”

Matt:I can’t pick just one moment! The entire ceremony and all of the speeches from our family members were my favourite part of the day.”

Newlywed Advice

“Everyone says this, but seriously, don’t sweat the small stuff. All of the little things we worried about were the things that nobody noticed or cared about in the end. And be present!!! The day goes by so fast, you will hardly remember it unless you take time to relax and enjoy the little moments.”

Looking Forward to Most Now Being Married

“Continuing to enjoy our life together as we always have, but with much better kitchen appliances! We received an automatic coffee machine as a wedding gift and it has been pretty life changing as far as mornings go. We are also looking forward to (after 8 years of dating) being allowed to sleep in the same bed when we visit Matt’s parents over the holidays.”

Rustic Elegance WeddingJessica + Brandon: Rustic Elegance Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on October 26, 2016

Jessica and Brandon first met at the Big Valley Jamboree. After meeting the first night, they spent the entire weekend together with their friends. It wasn’t long after returning home that they went on their first date and the rest was history.

The Proposal

The couple were camping in Sandpoint, Idaho for their summer vacation. One morning when they woke up Brandon suggested they take the dog for a walk along the water. They were enjoying the view and each others company, laughing and joking around as they usually do. Brandon found a moment to get down on one knee, asked the question and Jessica answered with a teary, “Yes!”

The Big Day

Jessica and Brandon were really open on what they wanted when they started looking for a wedding venue. Lions Garden was the first venue they saw in the city and booked it on the spot. “It just felt like us,” Jessica shares, “We loved that our guests could camp nearby, and we loved the look and feel of the whole venue.”It was most important to Jessica and Brandon that their guests had fun and were well fed. They had a traditional Ukrainian meal for dinner and a food truck for their midnight snack. “Our wedding was a beautiful representation of us, with the rustic but yet glamorous venue, the delicious meals, and incredible company of our friends and family.”

Favourite Moments

Jessica:We had a glitch in the sound system during our ceremony, which took a couple minutes to get the microphones working again. It was my favourite moment because it slowed it all down and gave us a time to just say “Hi” to each other.”

Brandon:Seeing my bride walk down the aisle. I was so excited to see her in her dress.”

Charbar YYC WeddingAlexandra + Adam: Charbar YYC Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on September 15, 2016

While Alexandra and Adam’s story sounds traditional at first—they met and fell in love during law school—their wedding was anything but. For a long time marriage was a hypothetical scenario until they were in a financial position to fund the type of wedding they wanted. When that time came, Alexandra and Adam skipped the formal proposal, set a date and started planning.

The Proposal

For a long time marriage was a hypothetical scenario until they were in a financial position to fund the type of wedding they wanted. When that time came, Alexandra and Adam skipped the formal proposal, set a date and started planning.

The Big Day

The couple wanted a unique venue with plenty of character to host both their ceremony and reception for 80 guests. Housed in Calgary’s historic Simmons building, local restaurant Charbar provided a charming atmosphere, fantastic food and gorgeous views of the Bow River.

The first tradition they cut was having a bridal party; Alexandra hosted a tea party the morning of the wedding to include her girlfriends while she was getting ready. Alexandra also loves boy band music, so a string duet played One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” as she walked down the aisle.

Adam enjoyed the first dance with his wife, which was also the only dance during the reception. They entertained guests with board games during the cocktail hour and topped off the evening with coffee and macarons instead of cake.

Favourite Moments

Alexandra:  “Holding hands with Adam during the ceremony.”

Adam:  “The first dance with my wife”

Newlywed Advice

“Put some thought into the details that are really meaningful and separate those that are less important. Consider eliminating aspects that aren’t a big deal. You don’t have to include every usual tradition at your wedding.”

Rustic Sorrento BC WeddingDesiree + Jon: Rustic Sorrento, BC Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on March 18, 2016

Desiree and Jonathan met and became close friends in 2007, but it took four years before their relationship evolved into something more serious.

The Proposal

On the first night at their acreage, Jonathan suggested they take a break from moving boxes for a glass of wine. When Desiree came back outside with a bottle, she found candles spread around the yard. Jonathan proposed to her under the starry sky.

The Big Day

Desiree and Jonathan didn’t have a specific theme in mind, but knew they wanted their wedding venue and decor to represent them as a couple. Uninspired by local venues, they set their sights on the Shuswap. Rustic Wedding at High Country Tree Farm in BC offered a picturesque outdoor ceremony site and a rustic open-air pavilion for their reception.

The couple added DIY touches to showcase their personalities. Desiree’s mom arranged all the flowers and baked their cake, and Jonathan and Desiree made the table numbers and centrepiece boxes together.

Favourite Moments

Desiree’s favourite moment was when she snuck out to the ceremony site to sip her coffee in the morning mist. Jonathan enjoyed hanging out with his groomsmen pre-ceremony in anticipation of seeing his bride. Later on the newlyweds shared a quiet moment under the stars watching their guests attempt a line dance.

Laduree Inspired WeddingSilvia + Dean: Laduree Inspired Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on February 17, 2016

The Proposal

Classic romance captures the essence of Silvia and Dean’s love story. On New Year’s Eve, Dean escorted Silvia to Rouge—her favourite restaurant and the place they fell in love—to enjoy a delightful three-course meal. With proposal plans made in advance, the couple was seated at the restaurant’s most intimate, private table where just before dessert Dean pulled a ring box out of his pocket and surprised Silvia with the question of her dreams, “Will you marry me?” Of course, she said yes.

The Big Day

Inspired by a Ladurée Macarons ad, Silvia and Dean’s wedding embodied the class, elegance and sophistication of French lifestyle. The couple selected The Rimrock Resort Hotel as their venue because its simple elegance and beautifully romantic atmosphere neatly complimented the unique décor details such as gorgeous hand-painted props on the dessert table and colourful florals that represent the couple’s favourite macarons.

Favourite Moments

Silvia:This is hard to answer as I had so many favourite moments. If I had to pick one, it would be when the curtains were pulled back and I was about to walk down the aisle and seeing Dean waiting for me. It was a very special moment for me because I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to become his wife.”

Dean:We finished our photo session with Nathan hours earlier than we anticipated, which allowed us time to eat soup, sandwich and truffles. In that moment I realized that this was our first meal as husband and wife.”
