Our Editor-In-Chief, Najla Elwenni, met with Randy Fenoli, one of the most trusted sources in the bridal and fashion industry, at Kleinfeld Bridal in Manhattan for this first ever Canadian cover and for an exclusive interview. In the process, we got a lesson on bridal fashion and a look into Randy’s lie off camera.

I have two; Portia de Rossi in 2008 and Ivanka Trump in 2009

Should a bride keep her wedding gown for her daughter/granddaughters? Has this gone out of “fashion” in recent years?

Weddings are about traditions, so I say YES! Keep it to make a christening dress, flower girl dress, or re-use your veil to keep some traditions alive.

Which celebrity bride are you most looking forward to this year?

Angelina Jolie

What can we find on your iPod right now?

‘Happy” by Pharrell Williams, “Run the World’ by Beyonce, a little disco and of course some show tunes.

Do you have a ballad that you think is especially arresting for a bride?

‘Marry Me’ by Train, ‘All of Me’ by John Legend and ‘Just the Way You Are’ by Bruno Mars

Your favourite social media platform? Why?

Facebook and Twitter. I love reading posts from my followers (trying to learn Instagram).

Do you have a daily ritual? What motivates you each day?

No. Each day is different and unique, but the one constant that motivates me is my little shih tzu Chewy! He wakes me up everyday with kisses all over my face. He’s such a loverboy!

NYC is famous for a lot of things, is there a café, bakery or restaurant that you’d recommend to visitors during their visit here?

Eataly, its like a little piece of Italy dropped in the middle of New York City!

Chewy has his own fan-base! What does he add to your life? How old is he?

Chewy is 7 months old now. He is absolutely the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet! There’s not a mean bone in his body; Just pure love. He’s also very smart, quite fearless and totally rambunctious! He also loves to play fetch.

In your opinion, the most romantic honeymoon theme or destination would be?

Whether they are at a private island resort, wine tasting & eating their way through Italy, on a Safari in Africa, or taking in the lights of Paris, for me, the most romantic place is somewhere that is personal to the couple.

What do you think of couples that opt for large-scale ostentatious weddings and forgo the honeymoon?

I try not to judge, so I would say it’s their choice, but it wouldn’t be mine.

In terms of the latest bridal fashion styles, what is an example of a re-visited trend?

Both sleeves and venise lace have made a very strong return to bridal fashion.

Colin Cowie, “Mr. Wedding” and event planner of the century, talks exclusively to Blush for an in-depth insight into how he broke into the biz, and why even Hugh Hefner chose him to get the job done. The author of eight bestselling books, Colin has been at the forefront of the biggest events globally for 25 years.

“I met Hugh Hefner and was commissioned to design and produce his wedding…little did I realize how famous the world’s most famous bachelor was! From then I was labeled Mr. Wedding,” says Cowie. Mr Wedding indeed, with clients that range from a who’s who in royalty and aristocracy, celebrity and society, Colin professes that his South African roots brought hospitality to the forefront in Los Angeles entertainment. From then on, it was up and away for the entrpeneur. He advises that couples should “pick three things and do them well rather than 5 things on the skinny. Spend your money on elements that your guests will get the most out of. Offer a better cut of meat and quality of wine instead of party favors, serve a delicious 3 course meal including dessert instead of an elaborate multi-course menu. Offer a signature cocktail instead of the proverbial red wine, white wine and water, save them for the meal service. And rather than hiring a band, book a DJ! Find one who understands how to work the energy in the room so when it’s time to party everyone is on the dance floor.” Sage advice from the man who has conceptually developed some of the biggest nuptial events in the world

What else can a couple do when entertaining to maximize impact?

  • If you want to show people your real sense of style, open your house to them.
  • When decorating, keep a thread of style by identifying your look and colour. Create one master theme that starts with the wreath on the front door, to the garland over your fireplace or stair banister to the focal point, bringing it to your tree and keep it going on your dining table.
  • Don’t forget the invitation should follow theme too.
  • I love the idea of making fabulous well-crafted cocktails. The bartender of yesterday is the rock star mixologist of today!

With a portfolio that boasts best-selling books, work for high-profile clients, and frequent television appearances, it is more than likely that at one time or another, you have encountered Preston Bailey’s immaculate work. It is hard to imagine that the first ten years of his career as a floral designer were spent working out of his one bedroom New York apartment. Years later, Preston Bailey Designs would come to occupy three floors of a building in New York City where Blush was invited to shoot our Fall|Winter 2012 cover in collaboration with Preston and his team. Although his work has been shared on the covers of several international publications, his work with Blush is the first cover that Preston has done with a Canadian magazine.

While it has taken some time to establish and develop a relationship between Preston and Blush, everything seemed to change drastically, over one weekend. We had introduced ourselves much earlier, had visited the studio and e-mailed, but it was only upon meeting in person that our future would be determined. A special guest at the Edmonton Bridal Expo, Preston also launched his most recent book, Flowers, in Edmonton. At the end of his trip to Edmonton, Preston extended an invitation to our editor-in-chief to work together; an invitation that she graciously accepted. Speaking in reference to Blush, Preston shares that when he saw the magazine, he said “‘oh my god this is beautiful’ and being the subtle person that I am, I said ‘why don’t we do a cover?’”

Like many in the wedding and event industry, Blush is amongst the many admirers of the awe-inspiring work of Preston Bailey. His opulent designs and intricate floral mastery inspire brides and the event industry alike, so to be granted an opportunity of this magnitude was completely unexpected. We wanted to share the news with everyone that Preston Bailey, The Preston Bailey, had invited us to work with him on the most elaborate cover and photo shoot Blush has ever done, but we waited until we were finally in New York. As a result, this was Blush’s best kept secret.

We are excited that Alberta’s brides and grooms will be introduced to the remarkable work of Preston Bailey, through his collaboration with Blush. With six months of careful planning, we shot our cover at Preston’s New York studio at the beginning of April. We travelled across the continent to meet the final members of our New York based team, a team that we had only met over the telephone and e-mail.

The day before the shoot, we were invited to visit the workroom where preparations were underway. Buckets were filled with the 435 beautiful stems that were flown in from California and transported from New York’s floral district the day before. The finest blooms of peony, hydrangea, roses, calla lilies, stock, and poppies were used on the two headpieces and cascading bouquet designed specifically for our cover. It is hard to believe that the pieces were designed on set, without so much as a sketch. With a floral designer and an accompanying assistant, it took approximately ten hours to assemble the headpiece alone. When asked how long it typically takes to design something like this, Preston responded saying: “you know the time, it’s interesting. People always ask how long it takes to design something. It doesn’t matter, because it’s fun and seeing it come to life, it’s such a pleasure.”

There’s something very Rio de Janeiro about this design. Inspired by Pantone’s colour of the year, tangerine, we wanted to incorporate the sophisticated, yet playful colour. Traditionally an autumnal hue, the seductive colour suited our overall inspiration for the cover of this special edition. Adhering to the exotic nature of our colour palette, Preston designed a headpiece reminiscent of something adorned by Carmen Miranda. We paired Preston’s exquisite floral design with the “One & Only” gown from designer Reem Acra’s Royals line; the chic ruffled skirt, another touch of Rio. The texture of the various flowers used, the layers of the bridal gown on the surface of the white wall and old hardwood floors combined to create increased depth in the photograph. This was our first destination shoot, and quite possibly the most prestigious first shoot that we could have ever hoped for. I may be biased, but I don’t think that this shoot could have been more perfect!
