Intimate Jasper Park Lodge Wedding

Where It All Began

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on October 8, 2021

Kristen and Peter met on Match. It started with a wink. She was on her lunch break and was scrolling through the app when she came across Peter’s profile. Kristen fell for his smile and kind eyes, so she sent him a wink and kept scrolling. A few days later, he messaged her back, asking about her travels and telling her about his trips to Europe. A week later he offered to drive over 300km to pick up Kristen for their first date. Kristen recalls the way Peter looked at her when she opened the door made her heart skip a beat, like he was pleasantly shocked and surprised. One date turned into 3 consecutive dates over the weekend and the rest is history.

The Proposal

Kristen was caught by surprise when Peter proposed at the Jasper Park Lodge in early January 2020. He had planned a weekend getaway for just the two of them since he had to work over Christmas. They started out the day going on the Maligne Canyon ice walk tour, followed by dinner at Syrahs of Jasper, then a relaxing dip in the hot tub back at the Lodge, and finally drinks by a cozy fire in their suite. They were cuddled up on the couch watching the fire when Kristen started dozzing off. When she opened her eyes, there was a ring box on her pillow and Peter got down on one knee. Peter had the ring with him the whole day and nearly proposed 3 times that day but was waiting for the perfect moment.

The Big Day

The newly engaged couple had originally booked the Blackhawk Golf Club in Edmonton to accommodate a larger guest list. When it became clear that a large wedding may not be possible, they both agreed that getting married on their original date, no matter if it was just the two of them or a select few, was the most important thing.

They decided to cut the guest list to just their wedding party and immediate family, pick a beautiful location, focus on getting married, enjoying their day, and have beautiful photos and video to remind them of it all. They instantly thought of Jasper since they got engaged there, the place was meaningful to them both. After making that decision,  the couple shared that planning the rest of their wedding was so much easier and so much more fun.

Shortly before the wedding, Kristen’s grandmother passed away after a sudden unexpected diagnosis. A few years earlier, she had gifted her with a beautiful pearl necklace and earrings from her grandfather. Inside the jewelry box was a hand written note from Kristen’s grandfather to her grandmother. She had asked that Kristen have the pearls restrung before wearing them as the necklace was old and she was worried it would break. Kristen had the pearls restrung into a triple-strand bracelet so that she could wear it on her wedding day and have her close to me.

To honour her grandmother, they played Somewhere Over the Rainbow as the bridesmaids walked down the aisle. It was one of her favourite songs,

Peter’s mom is a talented seamstress who not only made the bridesmaid dresses and flower girl dress from scratch, but also did all the alterations on the bride’s wedding dress and veil. She also baked over 15 trays of special Hungarian pastries and traditional wedding pastries for all the guests to take home and for the couple to enjoy the entire weekend.

Kristen’s twin brother Matthew walked her to the beginning of the aisle before she walked down with her father. She remembered that while they were waiting to walk, they chatted and laughed and joked that he was was more nervous than Kristen was.

Favourite Moments

Kristen: “Our fist look. We did it at Old Fort Point. My maid of honour came along with her “mom bag” and carried my train up all the wooden stairs. It took us a few minutes to reach the top. I joked that she should go first and surprise Peter, but I didn’t want to miss the look on his face when he saw me for the first time. It was first-date butterflies all over again.”

Peter: “My vows, including my promise to break down the cardboard boxes before throwing them in the garage.”
