Charbar YYC WeddingAlexandra + Adam: Charbar YYC Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on September 15, 2016

While Alexandra and Adam’s story sounds traditional at first—they met and fell in love during law school—their wedding was anything but. For a long time marriage was a hypothetical scenario until they were in a financial position to fund the type of wedding they wanted. When that time came, Alexandra and Adam skipped the formal proposal, set a date and started planning.

The Proposal

For a long time marriage was a hypothetical scenario until they were in a financial position to fund the type of wedding they wanted. When that time came, Alexandra and Adam skipped the formal proposal, set a date and started planning.

The Big Day

The couple wanted a unique venue with plenty of character to host both their ceremony and reception for 80 guests. Housed in Calgary’s historic Simmons building, local restaurant Charbar provided a charming atmosphere, fantastic food and gorgeous views of the Bow River.

The first tradition they cut was having a bridal party; Alexandra hosted a tea party the morning of the wedding to include her girlfriends while she was getting ready. Alexandra also loves boy band music, so a string duet played One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” as she walked down the aisle.

Adam enjoyed the first dance with his wife, which was also the only dance during the reception. They entertained guests with board games during the cocktail hour and topped off the evening with coffee and macarons instead of cake.

Favourite Moments

Alexandra:  “Holding hands with Adam during the ceremony.”

Adam:  “The first dance with my wife”

Newlywed Advice

“Put some thought into the details that are really meaningful and separate those that are less important. Consider eliminating aspects that aren’t a big deal. You don’t have to include every usual tradition at your wedding.”

Rustic Sorrento BC WeddingDesiree + Jon: Rustic Sorrento, BC Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on March 18, 2016

Desiree and Jonathan met and became close friends in 2007, but it took four years before their relationship evolved into something more serious.

The Proposal

On the first night at their acreage, Jonathan suggested they take a break from moving boxes for a glass of wine. When Desiree came back outside with a bottle, she found candles spread around the yard. Jonathan proposed to her under the starry sky.

The Big Day

Desiree and Jonathan didn’t have a specific theme in mind, but knew they wanted their wedding venue and decor to represent them as a couple. Uninspired by local venues, they set their sights on the Shuswap. Rustic Wedding at High Country Tree Farm in BC offered a picturesque outdoor ceremony site and a rustic open-air pavilion for their reception.

The couple added DIY touches to showcase their personalities. Desiree’s mom arranged all the flowers and baked their cake, and Jonathan and Desiree made the table numbers and centrepiece boxes together.

Favourite Moments

Desiree’s favourite moment was when she snuck out to the ceremony site to sip her coffee in the morning mist. Jonathan enjoyed hanging out with his groomsmen pre-ceremony in anticipation of seeing his bride. Later on the newlyweds shared a quiet moment under the stars watching their guests attempt a line dance.

Elk View Lodge WeddingShea + Andy: Elk View Lodge Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on February 21, 2016

The stars aligned the night Shea and Andy met. They knew about each other through a mutual friend, but didn’t meet until Andy drove to Calgary for a military course. He invited Shea for a drink and she accepted despite having classes the next day and plans with her brother, Cody, that night. It turned out classes were cancelled, Cody went on a date with his future wife, and Shea and Andy fell in love.

The Proposal

On a weekend trip to Fernie, Andy booked a spa date to make up for leaving Shea behind to golf with her dad. After an hour of pampering, the two were relaxing in the spa lounge when Andy left for a bathroom break. He came back with the ring “and said all of the things every girl wants to hear from the man she loves when he asks her to be his wife!” says Shea.

The Big Day

The couple held their wedding in beautiful Fernie, BC with a cozy reception at Elk View Lodge. They had a midnight taco and nacho bar to feed Shea’s nacho addiction, and honoured Andy’s military background by donating to the Royal Canadian Legion in lieu of wedding favours.

Favourite Moments

While they had fun dancing all night, their vows are what really mattered to Shea and Andy; “Promising our lives to one another was truly what our wedding was about.”

Rustic Wedding at The Hanger in Fort EdmontonRustic Fort Edm Wedding: Julie & Kyle

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on September 2, 2015

The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy can be neither created nor destroyed; the energy of the universe is constant. The same could be said of true love. High school sweethearts Julie and Kyle first shared chemistry class together, then a home, and now a new life as husband and wife.

The Proposal

Six years into their relationship Julie and Kyle purchased a house together. On the night of their possession, they did a walkthrough of the home. After the home inspector left, Kyle wanted to take another look upstairs in case they missed something. Julie followed him into the master bedroom, where he pretended to look around before getting down on one knee.

The Big Day

The couple wanted their wedding venue to be rustic but still located in the heart of the city, and the Blatchford Air Hangar at Fort Edmonton Park fit the bill. They topped off their big day with cheese and gravy–La Poutine Food Truck dished up a fun midnight lunch.

Favourite Moments

Julie: “Our first dance. I know it seems cheesy, but it was perfect. All of the stressful parts were finished like vows and speeches. I didn’t have a care in the world, we just melted into each other. We are both horrible dances too, but we just seemed to glide across the floor. I’ll never forget it.”

Kyle: “When I saw Julie walking down the isle. I honestly wasn’t nervous at all about the wedding prior to the day and even right up until the moment when I myself walked down the isle to wait for her. I don’t know why, but the apprehension really built up the closer I got to the end of the isle. The moment I saw her smiling face all the nerves were gone and it really was the beginning of one amazing day.”
