Pinning Down Love The Need For More Diversity In The Wedding Industry

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on January 23, 2017

One day Buffy Goodman entered “wedding dress” into the search bar on Pinterest just to see what would come up. As a wedding photographer, she talks with couples constantly and knows almost all of them have used the site for wedding inspiration or created their own page.

As she scrolled through hundreds of photos of women in white dresses, Buffy grew frustrated at the lack of diversity. “I had to scroll down through 160 photos to find a single person of colour,” she said. “I didn’t see one plus-size bride in this search.”

She switched gears and searched “wedding photo” in hopes of finding more variation in her own field, but again with disappointing results. “My eyes actually blurred a little as I scrolled past identical-looking photos of thin, white heterosexual couples.” The photos were pretty, but also pretty boring.

Inspiration struck and Buffy organized a photo shoot to celebrate the beautiful diversity of love and marriage regardless of size, ethnicity or sexual orientation. The results are fresh, gorgeous and beyond Pinterest-worthy.
