Intimate Dinner PartyKatie + Jordan: Intimate Dinner Party

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on September 18, 2018

Katie caught Jordan’s eye at the University of Alberta where both were studying design. She was dating someone else, but Jordan persevered until his charm and commitment won her over.

The Proposal

One year when Jordan suggested they leave for their annual Jasper ski trip a few days early, she knew he was up to something. What she didn’t know was that he had her ring custom-made with design elements inspired by her grandmother’s wedding ring. Jordan nervously proposed on a hike in Maligne Canyon. “It was a really special moment because we both knew what was happening.”

The Big Day

The couple wanted their wedding to focus on togetherness, so it was important to keep everyone together between the ceremony and reception. After the emotional vows and a group photo—including their dog, Phoebe—a school bus whisked everyone away for a cozy dinner and craft beer at Otto. They knew the staff would make everyone feel welcome, but they were completely blown away when they walked into their reception. “I wanted our wedding to feel like a warm family dinner, and it was the perfect atmosphere for the night.”

Katie—Blush’s own graphic designer—designed all the stationery and created a time capsule guest book. The husband and wife will open one envelope on each of their next 50 anniversaries, revealing a polaroid photo and words of love and advice.

Favourite Moments

Jordan: “Seeing Katie for the first look, and seeing her walk down the aisle. And being able to incorporate our dog, Phoebe, into the day in some way. We arranged to have her dropped off for some of our portraits.”

Katie: After a highly emotional day, walking into our reception at Otto and seeing how welcoming the space was, and how they had gone above and beyond setting up for us made me instantly relax and enjoy the intimate evening together!

Urban Calgary WeddingAmber + Steven: Urban Calgary Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on April 2, 2018

Meeting your future spouse through mutual friends is fairly common, but what makes Amber and Steven’s story unique is that they met through a friend in Indonesia. At the time Steven was working for a travel company and Amber was touring through Southeast Asia. They fell hard and fast for each other on a trip with friends to Thailand, then spent two weeks together on some remote islands in Vietnam. Six months later they finished university and moved in together.

The Proposal

Steven surprised Amber with an early birthday gift—a trip to New York City to watch the US Open. He surprised her again on the trip with tickets to see the Blue Jays play the Yankees, but he saved the best surprise for last. As they were crossing a beautiful bridge in Central Park with bagels in hand and the city skyline in the background, Steven popped the question.

The Big Day

Amber and Steven were married at a private ranch, but wanted a unique reception space. “The Commons had the industrial feel that allowed us to create our vision.” They served a featured cocktail inspired by the official cocktail of the US Open, the Honey Deuce, and called it the Honey I Do.

Love Filled WeddingSarah + John: Love Filled Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on January 29, 2018

John and Sarah were never strangers (John is a long-time friend of Sarah’s brother), but they also never had a real conversation until they met at a Canada Day celebration in 2014. After one or two dates they made their relationship status official, and two years later John decided to take things to the next level.

The Proposal

Over the July long weekend, John suggested they go for a bike ride. Sarah didn’t understand why he kept one hand in his pocket even though he kept swerving, and when they stopped to watch the sun set over a small pond she thought he was shaking in nervousness about the his triathlon the next day. John took a few moments to shake it off, and then got down on one knee.

The Big Day

The couple needed a space that could hold 200 guests while allowing extra room for dancing and mingling. The Blatchford Air Hangar at Fort Edmonton Park offered ample space, a neutral palette, and the grandest of entrances courtesy of the spectacular hangar doors. They wanted to emphasize the importance of family and created two large x-shaped tables for their immediate families. They also have the reception chairs they sat on during their first meal as husband and wife in their home as a simple reminder of their amazing day full of love and family.

Favourite Moments

Sarah: “My immediate response is the moment I saw John at the altar.  Other favourite moments were each time I paused to take in the guests surrounding us on our wedding day. I remember looking out during dinner, during the dance and even when we were at the altar. I will forever remember our best friends and family looking up at us with so much love and support. It truly is a once in a lifetime feeling!”

John: “I have a few! 1)When the doors of the church opened and I saw my soon to be wife for the very first time 2) Listening to all of the amazing words that people had to say about my wife and I during the speeches 3) The party!”

Newlywed Advice

“Hiring a day-of coordinator was one of the greatest decisions we made. We knew what we wanted in a wedding so the planning portion was simple, but making sure the day runs smoothly is something the bride and groom have little control over.”

Looking Forward to Most Now Being Married

“We are looking forward to simply making a life together! Combining our lives after the big day has been so much fun for the both of us, and we look forward to all of the new adventures as husband and wife!”

Intimate Dinner WeddingAnnan + Justin: Intimate Dinner Wedding

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on January 15, 2018

Annan and Justin met at the gym, but Justin was so shy his best friend had to ask for Annan’s number. Things didn’t take off between them, but they kept in touch and eventually became sweethearts after university.

The Proposal

One morning while lying in bed, Annan was showing Justin pictures of engagement rings on her phone. He reached over to his nightstand, took out a small box and asked, “What about this one?” Unfortunately their celebration was cut short as two days later they were evacuated from their Fort McMurray home due to the 2016 wildfire.

The Big Day

Annan and Justin didn’t want a large, traditional wedding, so they planned an “unwedding.” They sent out invitations for a belated engagement dinner to 30 of their closest friends and family at Ruth’s Chris Steak House, which is where they had dinner during their first trip to Edmonton together. What most guests didn’t know is that they had just said their vows in front of just their officiant, photographer, and two witnesses.

They got married on Annan’s late father’s birthday, and she had her brother fill in as maid-of-honour before meeting Justin at the exact table in the Westin bar where he had asked her to be his girlfriend. “It was like coming full circle,” she said.

Favourite Moments

Annan: “My brother, James, helping me with my dress. I’m sure that’s supposed to be a Maid of Honor moment but he was by the far the perfect person to ensure everything was perfect before getting married. Followed by meeting Justin at the exact table in the bar at the Westin where he’d asked me to be his girlfriend so we could walk to our ceremony together. It was like coming full circle.”

Justin: “Annan being so emotional during the private ceremony that she couldn’t remember which hand was left during the exchanging of the rings.”

Traditional Meets ContemporaryBrianna + Anthony: Traditional x Contemporary

Posted by Blush Magazine Posted on November 12, 2017

For Brianna and Anthony, life is truly an adventure! They started dating after they met while volunteering at the University of Alberta Orientation.

The Proposal

A few years later after a day of mishaps trying to get to Anthony’s family cabin on Pierce Lake, the couple took a moment to relax on the dock at sunset. As the crystal waters reflected the golden sky, Anthony got down on one knee and asked Brianna to join him on a trip down the aisle.

The Big Day

Brianna and Anthony combined traditional and contemporary elements for their unique fall wedding. They were the third generation to be married at the quaint Josephburg Community Church. As the church doors opened, Brianna took an extra moment to savour the details and people that brought so much joy to the day—particularly her smiling groom. The jewel-toned sculptured floral arrangements and Brianna’s two-piece gown with a golden blush skirt and long-sleeved lace top transitioned beautifully from the country ceremony to the urban reception at the Art Gallery of Alberta. After a whole day of celebrating with family and friends, the newlyweds took some time for themselves and headed to the mountains for a stunning post-wedding photo shoot.

Favourite Moments

Brianna: “When the church sanctuary doors opened, and before walking down the aisle, I took an extra moment to capture the joy of my wedding day. I looked at the flowers, our guests, my parents and most importantly the adoring gaze and smile of my groom.”Anthony: “The Whole Day! Celebrating and sharing our wedding day with all of our family and friends’
